From Sinterklaas to Santa Claus 'Twas the Night Before... is inspired by the classic 19th-century poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas' by Clement Clarke Moore, first published in 1823. This poem played a key role in shaping the modern image of Santa Claus: a jolly, rather plump figure who on Christmas Eve travels by sleigh and reindeer -- named Dasher, Dancer, and Donner & Blitzen -- going from house to house to drop gifts down chimneys into stockings hung above the fireplace. The poem built upon the tradition of Sint-Nicolaas, the holy bishop known to us as Sinterklaas. Dutch colonists brought their Sinterklaas traditions to New York, formerly known as New Amsterdam. There, "Sinterklaas" linguistically evolved into "Santa Claus". Cirque du Soleil now brings this rich story to life on stage, giving it a new dimension with spectacular acts that will delight every generation.
